Career Choices - Hotel Management May be for You

By John Groth

If you enjoy being in charge and are good at leading people maybe a career in hotel management may be for you. In any management job if you can lead, inspire and motivate you will be successful. One of the overlooked and better management fields is hotel management. Combined with management skills you need to be effective providing customer service. Here is an overview about a hospitality career in hotel management.

In a lot of management careers, all you need is good leadership skills. Although this is definitely needed in a hotel management career, there are other abilities that you will need as well.

Most importantly, this kind of job requires a lot of customer service. If you aren't good at dealing with customers or you don't like to go by the motto, 'the customer is always right,' then you should probably consider managing something that doesn't have to do with customers. If you do like working with customers, and resolving their concerns, then you would be perfect for a hotel management career.

Making quick positive decisions is another requirement for this type of position. Many times you will not have someone else to rely on or you will only have the barest of information but a decision must be made now. This many times is the nature of the business, the pace is fast and when today is done there is no tomorrow. But the customer want the answer now, or you have to give the employee instructions now, or the event planner needs a decision now, so it's a prime requirement of a good hotel manger to be able to deal with this type of pace.

Another thing that you should know is that, depending on the size of the hotel and how they organize their staff, you may end up with the responsibilities of managing a much larger group of people than you normally would. When you work for a computer company for example, you may only manage a group of five to ten people. When you have a hotel management career, you may end up managing up to one hundred people or more, and with staff on duty 24 hours.

After all, there is a lot of staff involved in running and maintaining a hotel. Some hotel managers are in charge of the whole staff. Other times, there are lower level managers that have control over only certain kinds of staff members, such as housekeeping staff or the front desk. You should know how well you manage groups of people before you start a hotel management career.

If you are fine managing larger groups of people, then don't hesitate to strive for the management position that controls the whole hotel's staff. Hotel management can be a rewarding career, with a fast pace and something new to be resolved every day. If this fits the type of career you're interested in a hotel management position should be considered.
